Evaluation - Question 2 - Claire

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our character (Nicki Hastings) represents the young single woman with disabilities demographic because, she has a mental Illness, is a young woman and in no committed sexual relationship with another human, she is also white – British. This is a ‘thriller’ stereotype for woman because it intrigues an audience as woman are seen to be more vulnerable,  and it is easier for something strange to happen to a woman than a man due to more stereotypes of women having an incredibly unreadable/understandable mind. We chose to make her a stereotype because there is a bigger audience that wants to watch what is expected and they know than having to accept the fact that everything is different, on top of trying to figure what the true story line is of the thriller.
To portray the mental illness of Nicki we used a lot of shots of her staring into space, played with the depth of field to show her dazey mind set. There is once sequence where she show her staring into space while on the swing then laughing and going back to being spaced. Through her use of body language and facial expressions you can see she is physically and mentally drained and has way too much going on in her head, which is also heled shown through the camera shot size. You can see from her messy hair and half effort costume that she is slowly losing the will and is breaking down. The use of light makes everything around her seem bright and highlights the fact she is depressed. For the sound, it is a diegetic track of the ambient noise from the park, there is no dialogue on purpose to show how far from the real world she is, which is why the diegetic  track is quite loud, it our powers her and shows her weakness.

Nicki tries to show her therapist she has the power, but in fact she in the weakest person in the movie which is shown through the shots. There is a depth of field shot that makes Nicki blurry and highlights the trees around her signifying how invisible she is and hopeless, like her mum. The diegetic soundtrack of the ambient noise at the park pushes Nicki to the back and shows her as just being there like a fixture instead of the main focus.
