The first shot is a MTS (medium two shot) of a women and a man.
There is no soundtrack just ambient sound from the street behind and from the diner they are in. There is dialogue between the two characters it is mainly phatic talk creating a casual vibe.
The mood is positive and it’s really hard to tell this is a thriller at this point due to facial expressions of characters. There is a close up of the waitress as she smiles and pours coffee.
The editing frequency speeds
up as they start talking about less innocent subjects such as robbing a bank
ect.
The editing is shot reverse
shot as the characters discuss there plans to rob the café they are in.
The next time the waitress
comes back we do not see her face as she has her back to the camera. This gives
off more of a negative vibe than before as by their facial expressions it is
clear she is not smiling at them.
The what we see in the first few seconds really contrasts
with the way the opening ends because just before this smiley happy scene is over
the mood changes.
A prop (gun) Is used to
change the mood and create that thrilling intro to the film. The gun is
introduced so suddenly it shocks you and the close up of the gun being slammed
down on the table really draws more attention giving that ‘can’t take your eyes
off the screen’ feel to the film.
Contrast of things is used a
lot throughout this intro as it makes the change more dramatic. The dialogue
just before the characters rob the café is ‘I love you pumpkin’ and then
straight away the characters shift into aggressive robbers and start screaming
and shouting with bad language. Going from a soft ‘I love you’ to screaming and
swearing in such a short space of time it surprises and intrigues viewers.
