Lovely Bones - Ailsa

LOVELY BONES

As we are bought into the opening of “Lovely Bones” a CU of a snow globe is tracked out and therefore the lighting gets brighter. Sombre piano music is being played over this scene, and then dialogue comes in of a girl’s voice, she says “I remember” so therefore this tells the audience she is reflecting back. The snow globe emphasises the girl’s innocence, which is common with thrillers as this then makes the ending so much more shocking.

More lively music starts as we see a woman in bed reading, this is a MCU which shows her actions as well as her facial expression.   A man next to her is revealed and by their body language we can tell the couple are either married or dating. The dark colours of the wood, clothes and other props all suggest darkness to come in the rest of the film.

The effect of time passing is shown through transitions and lighting, and we see CUs and props to show family life, and the focus of the main character is shown by a photo of her. This shows her importance to both what is about to happen and to her family.

We see an ELS of her house, the lighting is dark and we see flashes through her windows, this is her taking photographs but also could link to gunshots.
As she says “I love the way a photo can capture a moment, before it was gone” there is a fade to black straight after. The girl talking about a moment being gone seems strange and also the black after emphasises this dialogue, the black makes it seem more sinister.

The light non diegetic sound continues as we are shown her neighbour, this makes the neighbourhood she lives in seem innocent and therefore creates even more surprise as the film gets more thrilling.
