Drive - Ailsa

DRIVE

As we start watching the opening of Drive, we see a CU of a map and a vase on top. Along with this we hear a man saying “you give me a time and a place” which anchors the map with his dialogue. It also creates enigma for the audience.

We can see a man on the phone by a window and his reflection, the lighting is dark and it emphasises the fact we don’t know him and he is talking about something secret. Apart from the dialogue there is no sound which highlights the importance of his phone call.

Panning around the room reveals that there isn’t anything personal about his setting, which also creates mystery. It also shows a bag lying on his bed, which he then puts on his shoulder. The bag is positioned without anything else around it and this emphasises it has something in it that is either worth or lot or is important.

A low angle is used to film him driving, this makes him look powerful. The lighting is still dark to emphasise danger.

A man in a garage escorts the main character to a car and he says “no one will be looking at you”, this shows the character has something to hide and this car is for something dodgy. Upbeat non diegetic music starts as the car is revealed.

The sound becomes loader and we are shown a extreme high angle view of a city, diegetic sound of sirens is also added to hint danger and the excitement of the city. The high angle also contrasts with the earlier low angle of the main character to emphasise his power.

A MCU is shown of the main character to show his reaction to two people in the distance wearing all black (which has connotations of violence and danger).

After breaking in somewhere surrounded by gates, one of the men gets in the main character’s car with a balaclava on which has connotations to breaking the law and danger, and the sound of a siren is heard which increases tension.
